University and adult

University and adult
tutoring in Canberra.

Tutoring does not stop at Year 12, and almost nobody here says so.

Tutoring does not stop at Year 12.

A steady share of enquiries come from university students and from adults returning to study — and almost no Canberra tutoring service says out loud that it takes them.

University students

  • First-year mathematics, calculus and linear algebra.
  • Statistics, research methods and econometrics.
  • Chemistry, physics and biology service units.
  • Academic writing, structure and referencing.
  • Exam technique for subjects that are examined — unlike ACT school subjects.

Canberra has ANU, the University of Canberra, ACU and UNSW Canberra at ADFA. First-year STEM units fail a meaningful number of otherwise capable students, usually on assumed knowledge nobody taught them.

Adults returning to study

  • Numeracy and literacy for entry tests and career change.
  • Bridging and enabling course support.
  • Preparation for professional or licensing examinations.
  • Helping your own child — and needing to relearn it first.

There is nothing embarrassing about this and we do not treat it as remedial. Adults generally learn faster than teenagers because they have chosen to be there.

What is different about teaching adults.

Adults arrive with a deadline, a specific goal and limited time. Sessions are built backwards from the assessment date rather than following a syllabus in order, and the first hour is spent working out what can safely be skipped.

Scheduling is different too — evenings, early mornings and irregular weeks are normal, and online usually suits better than in-home. Online tutoring.

One honest limit. We do not complete assessable work, and that applies with more force at university, where academic-integrity penalties are severe and can end a degree. We teach against the marking rubric; you write it.

If a unit is genuinely beyond what we can support well, we will say so at the assessment rather than take a term of your money finding out.

What the free hour covers.

A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in your home, before anything is paid. The teacher looks at the last marked assessment and the current task sheet, and you keep a written plan whether or not a lesson is ever booked.

Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and everyone who works in Queanbeyan holds a NSW Working with Children Check as well.

No mark, unit score or ATAR outcome is guaranteed by Canberra Tutoring, because no honest service can guarantee one. What is guaranteed is the same teacher every week, the full hour, and a plan in writing.

University and adult tutoring questions

Do you tutor university students?

Yes — first-year mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, biology service units, econometrics and academic writing, for students at ANU, the University of Canberra, ACU and UNSW Canberra.

Do you tutor adults?

Yes. Numeracy and literacy for career change, bridging and enabling courses, professional exam preparation, and parents who want to understand what their own child is being taught.

Is it awkward being tutored as an adult?

It should not be, and it is more common than people assume. Adults generally progress faster than school students because they have chosen to be there and know exactly what they need.

Can you help with my assignment?

We teach against the marking rubric and give feedback on a draft; we do not write or complete assessable work. At university level, academic-integrity penalties are severe and can end a degree, so the line is firm.

How is university tutoring priced?

It is quoted individually, like all our tutoring. University-level work is generally delivered by a qualified teacher or subject specialist rather than a tutor, which affects the rate.

Can sessions run in the evening?

Yes. Evening and early-morning sessions are normal for adult and university students, and online usually suits better than in-home for this group.
