An online tutoring lesson

Anywhere, same teacher

Online, when
it suits better.

The same tutor every week — and an actual answer on whether online works.

Is online as good as in person? Here is an actual answer.

The standard answer in this market is “it depends on the student and subject” — a competitor undermining its own product in its own FAQ.

For most students from roughly Year 5 upward, and for senior subjects in particular, online tutoring is equally effective when three conditions hold: the same tutor every week, a shared workspace where both people can write, and a parent within earshot.

Remove any one of those and the quality drops sharply. That is why the conditions get stated rather than glossed over.

The honest exception

Early primary students, structured literacy work, and children who need physical materials in front of them do better in the home. A five-year-old learning letter formation needs a hand next to theirs.

Where that describes your child, in-home tutoring is the better page. Naming a real limitation is what makes the rest of this page worth believing.

The same tutor, the same hour, every week.

National online platforms and tutor marketplaces rotate whoever is available. A child explains their situation again to a stranger each fortnight, and nobody holds the thread of what was taught last month.

Canberra Tutoring runs a fixed local teaching team, so the same person attends each week. Where a tutor is unavailable, the family is told in advance and the lesson is moved rather than reassigned to a stranger.

Explicitly ACT, not a national template

Online teachers here work to the ACT context: BSSS unit scores and school-based assessment, the college assessment calendar, moderation in March and August, and the ACT Scaling Test.

A national online service cannot say that, because its content is generally written for the NSW HSC. How the ACT senior system works.

How a session actually runs.

  • A shared workspace both people can write on in real time.
  • Handwritten working shown by document camera or a phone as a second camera.
  • The student's own task sheet and marked work on screen, annotated live.
  • A short written summary to the parent after the session.

What the family needs

  • A device with a working camera and microphone.
  • A quiet space that is not a bedroom.
  • A stable connection.
  • School books out before the session starts, and a parent in the house.

The same WWVP-registered teachers who work in homes deliver the online lessons, under the same child-safety expectations.

Across the border, and when online is the deliberate choice.

Online serves the families that in-home travel limits cannot: Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong, Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Yass.

One system difference matters enormously there. NSW students sit the HSC under NESA, not the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. Canberra Tutoring teaches both, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake a border family can make. Tutoring in Queanbeyan.

Online is often the deliberate right answer rather than a fallback: an evening slot after sport, a specialist subject where the right teacher lives across town, illness, weather, school holidays and travel, or continuity for a family moving suburb mid-year.

Subjects delivered online include maths from Kindergarten to Year 12 including Mathematical Methods and Specialist Methods, English, the sciences, and senior BSSS courses.

The free assessment is still a full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher. For families inside Canberra it happens in the home even when the lessons will run online, because the house is part of the diagnosis.

Questions about online tutoring

Is online tutoring as good as in person?

For most students from about Year 5 upward, and for senior subjects especially, yes — provided three conditions hold: the same tutor every week, a shared workspace both people can write on, and a parent within earshot. Early primary students and structured literacy work are genuinely better served in the home.

Will we get the same tutor each week?

Yes. Canberra Tutoring runs a fixed local teaching team rather than a rotating marketplace roster, so the same person attends weekly. Where a tutor is unavailable the family is told in advance and the lesson moves.

What does my child need for an online lesson?

A device with a working camera and microphone, a stable connection, a quiet space that is not a bedroom, the school books out before the session starts, and a parent in the house.

How does the tutor see handwritten working?

Through a document camera or a phone used as a second camera, so the tutor watches the working as it happens rather than seeing only the answer. Both people can also write on a shared workspace in real time.

Do you tutor Queanbeyan and NSW students?

Yes. Online serves Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong, Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Yass. NSW students sit the HSC under NESA rather than the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate, and Canberra Tutoring teaches both systems.

Can we start online and switch to in-home?

Yes, in either direction. Many families use both — in-home most weeks, online when sport, illness or weather interferes.

Do you know the ACT college system?

Yes, and it is the main reason to choose a local service over a national one. Online teachers here work to BSSS unit scores, school-based assessment, the college assessment calendar, moderation in March and August, and the ACT Scaling Test.

Are sessions recorded?

Sessions are not recorded by default. Where a family wants a recording for revision, that is arranged explicitly with the parent's consent beforehand.

The short version

Why families pick us.

Named among Canberra’s best

One of five tutoring services named in Region Canberra’s guide to the best tutors in Canberra, updated December 2025.

Teaching here since 2004

Twenty-two years in this city — long enough to have taught in the same college a parent went to, and to know which primary schools run which reading programs.

Checked twice, not once

Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and everyone who crosses the border to Queanbeyan holds a NSW Working with Children Check as well. Ask for the number before the first lesson.

Qualified teachers, not only tutors

Most tutoring in Canberra is delivered by university students. We field both, and the free assessment decides which one your child actually needs.

A second opinion behind every tutor

Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff, so if something is not working it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.

An hour before you spend anything

A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, at your kitchen table, and a written report you keep whether or not you ever book a lesson.
