Tutoring in
Queanbeyan.
Across the border the rules change — and most advice you will read is for the wrong system.
Queanbeyan students sit the HSC, not the ACT certificate.
Queanbeyan is in New South Wales. Students at Queanbeyan schools work to the NSW curriculum and are awarded the Higher School Certificate under NESA — not the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate.
This is the most expensive misunderstanding available to a border family, and it runs in both directions.
Nothing about ACT unit scores, cross-college moderation or the ACT Scaling Test applies to a student sitting the HSC. Equally, a Queanbeyan student who crosses the border to attend an ACT college moves into the ACT system entirely and should stop reading HSC advice.
Most tutoring content a Queanbeyan parent finds online is written for one system or the other without saying which. Establishing which system a student actually sits inside is the first thing the free assessment does.

What NSW assessment means in practice.
The HSC is examined externally. Final results combine school-based assessment with external examinations at the end of Year 12, which is close to the opposite of the ACT arrangement, where there are no external subject examinations and unit scores accumulate from Year 11.
The practical consequence for a family: in the NSW system the final examination period genuinely carries weight, so preparation timed at the end of the course is not wasted in the way it would be across the border.
Selective and opportunity class placement in NSW is run by the NSW Department of Education, with its own application windows and its own tests. Those are separate from the ACER scholarship tests used by many ACT independent schools. Scholarship and selective preparation.
Confirm current NSW placement test dates and format at education.nsw.gov.au — they change year to year.
Checks: two schemes, and neither covers the other.
The ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration and the NSW Working with Children Check are separate schemes. An ACT registration does not authorise work with children in New South Wales, and a NSW check does not authorise work in the ACT.
Every tutor and teacher who works in Queanbeyan holds a current NSW Working with Children Check as well as their ACT registration. Ask for either number before the first lesson and it will be given to you.
A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in your home, before anything is paid, with a written plan the family keeps.
Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff, so where something is not working it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.
Questions Canberra parents ask
Do Queanbeyan students do the HSC or the ACT certificate?
Students at Queanbeyan schools sit the NSW Higher School Certificate under NESA. A Queanbeyan student who crosses the border to attend an ACT college works to the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate instead. The two systems assess very differently, so establishing which one applies is the first step.
How is NSW assessment different from the ACT?
The HSC combines school-based assessment with external examinations at the end of Year 12. The ACT sets no external subject examinations at all and builds course scores from unit scores accumulated across Years 11 and 12. Advice written for one system can be actively misleading in the other.
Which areas do you cover around Queanbeyan?
Queanbeyan, Queanbeyan East, Queanbeyan West, Karabar, Crestwood, Jerrabomberra, Googong and Bungendore. Online is available more widely, including Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Yass.
Is the NSW selective test the same as an ACER scholarship test?
No. NSW selective high school and opportunity class placement is run by the NSW Department of Education with its own application window and test. ACER scholarship tests are used by many independent schools and are a separate process with separate registration and fees.
Does an ACT WWVP registration cover tutoring in Queanbeyan?
No — the two schemes are separate and neither covers the other, which is why every tutor and teacher we send into Queanbeyan holds both: the ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration and a current NSW Working with Children Check.
