Naming subjects is not a small thing in this market. The competing Canberra science page will not commit to any: it says support “may include” junior science, biology, chemistry and physics, and that availability depends on tutor match.

The maths dependency inside Physics and Chemistry
College Physics and Chemistry are gated by algebra: rearranging formulae, indices, logarithms and unit conversion. A great deal of “I don’t understand Physics” is unfinished Year 10 algebra wearing a lab coat.

Practical reports, taken seriously.
- Aim and hypothesis, written so they can actually be tested.

A qualified science teacher can mark a practical report against the criteria that will actually be applied. A first-year undergraduate generally cannot, because they have never marked one.
In the ACT, the practical report is the exam.
At T level each semester unit earns a unit score from school-based assessment, and a course score is built from the best 80% of those unit scores. The ACT sets no external science examination.
A practical report is therefore not a warm-up for something that matters later. Together with in-class tests it is the assessment, and it permanently affects the ATAR. How ACT scores are built.
Moderation runs twice a year, usually in early March and August, under a model of Structured, Consensus-based Peer Review. Teachers from other colleges review portfolios of student work against system-wide Achievement Standards.
The consequence for a science student: the standard being applied is a territory-wide standard, so knowing the published Achievement Standards for the course is worth more than guessing what one teacher prefers.
Years 7 to 10, and the reasoning the AST rewards.
The junior spine: cells and body systems, the particle model, chemical reactions and balancing equations, forces and motion, energy, electricity, genetics and evolution, and the Earth and space strand — plus scientific literacy and graph reading.
Scientific literacy and graph reading are what NAPLAN numeracy and the AST Multiple Choice paper actually test, which makes them worth more than their share of class time suggests.
The AST Multiple Choice paper runs 2 hours 15 minutes across 80 questions, built on stimulus drawn from the humanities, social sciences, sciences and mathematics. Science reasoning is directly rewarded by the test that scales every ATAR in the territory.
A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in the home, looking at the last marked practical report and the last test paper. No mark improvement is guaranteed; the same teacher every week is.

Do you actually have a Physics teacher?

My child is failing Chemistry in Year 11. Is it too late?
No, but the arithmetic matters. A course score uses the best 80% of unit scores, so one weak unit can be absorbed and a second cannot. Acting during Year 11 is materially cheaper than acting in Term 3 of Year 12, when most unit scores are already banked.
Can you help with a practical report without writing it?
Yes. The teacher reads the college's criteria with the student, marks the draft as a teacher would, and hands it back for the student to rewrite. The student writes the report.
Is Psychology covered?
Yes, as an ACT college subject alongside Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Environmental Science.
Does science tutoring need to be in person?
Not necessarily. Senior science works well online provided both people can annotate a shared workspace and the same tutor attends weekly. In-home suits students who need their folder, prac book and marked papers physically on the table.
Why is my child struggling in Physics when they are fine in other subjects?
The usual cause is algebra rather than physics. College Physics and Chemistry depend on rearranging formulae, indices, logarithms and unit conversion, so an unfinished Year 10 algebra topic surfaces as a science problem. The free assessment tests the maths underneath the science.
Is there an external science exam in the ACT?
No. The ACT sets no external subject-based examinations. Each semester unit earns a unit score from school-based assessment, which means practical reports and in-class tests carry the weight an exam carries in other states.
