We come to you
A tutor at your
kitchen table.
All nine districts, named — and the free hour happens in your home too.
Which suburbs? All nine districts. Here they are.
The usual answer in this market is that in-home availability “depends on tutor location”. That is a hedge, not an answer.
Canberra Tutoring teaches in homes across Belconnen, Gungahlin, the Inner North, the Inner South, Woden Valley, Weston Creek, the Molonglo Valley, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan.
Each district has its own page naming the suburbs and the schools inside it. Where a genuine travel limit exists, the limit gets stated rather than hedged — a stated boundary reads as competence, an evasion reads as an excuse.
The full map is on the coverage page.
Safety, said properly.
- Sessions never happen in a student's bedroom.
- A parent or responsible adult is home.
- A quiet, well-lit space with the schoolwork on the table.
- The same person every week, so nobody unfamiliar arrives.
Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. Ask for your tutor’s registration number before the first lesson and it will be given to you — no other Canberra tutoring service invites that check.
WWVP is the ACT-specific registration a Canberra parent recognises, and it is the check that matters here. Tutoring across the border in Queanbeyan additionally requires a NSW Working with Children Check — the two schemes are separate and neither covers the other.
What a teacher sees in your house that nobody sees in a centre.
The convenience argument for in-home tutoring is obvious and shallow: less driving, a familiar room. The real argument is diagnostic.
A teacher at your kitchen table sees the actual desk, the actual lighting, the actual level of distraction, and the actual state of the school folder. A centre sees a child in a room they have never been in, on their best behaviour, with none of that visible.
The homework happens in your house. Diagnosing why it goes badly is easier in the room where it goes badly.
The two-minute handover at the door each week is the part families end up valuing most. A parent hears what happened while it is fresh, rather than reading a summary at the end of term.
A tutor or a qualified teacher, and the assessment decides which. Most tutoring in Canberra is delivered by university students. Canberra Tutoring employs both qualified teachers and tutors, and if a child needs the teacher, that is what the family is told — even though it costs more.
The free hour happens in your home too.
A full 60 minutes. A qualified teacher. At your kitchen table. A written report you keep whether or not you ever book a lesson.
Twelve Canberra services advertise something free, so the word free settles nothing. Two other Canberra services will send someone to your home; the assessment is where the difference shows, because most competing offers are a consultation by phone or a first lesson you have to pay for and then claim back.
The practicalities that actually matter
- Matching: the same teacher every week, chosen for the subject and the child.
- If a tutor is unwell, a replacement is offered or the lesson is rescheduled at no charge.
- Rescheduling: let us know ahead and the lesson moves.
- Have the school books, the last marked test and the task sheet on the table.
Online is a deliberate equal option rather than a consolation prize — see online tutoring. Rates depend on year level, tutor or teacher, travel and frequency: pricing.
Questions about in-home tutoring
Do you cover my suburb?
Canberra Tutoring teaches in homes across all nine districts: Belconnen, Gungahlin, the Inner North, the Inner South, Woden Valley, Weston Creek, the Molonglo Valley, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan. Each district has a page listing its suburbs. Online is available anywhere.
Do you charge for travel?
Travel is one of the four things that set a quote, alongside year level, whether the lesson is delivered by a tutor or a qualified teacher, and how many lessons a week. The number is quoted once, on the phone, and does not move afterwards.
Does a parent need to be home?
Yes. A parent or responsible adult is home for every in-home session, and sessions never take place in a student's bedroom. Every tutor and teacher also holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration.
Is it a teacher or a tutor who comes?
Either, and the free assessment decides which. Canberra Tutoring employs both qualified teachers and tutors. A qualified teacher suits senior unit scores, structured literacy and diagnosing why a child is stuck; a tutor suits weekly consolidation.
Can we switch to online later?
Yes, in either direction, and many families use both — in-home most weeks, online when sport, weather or illness gets in the way. The same tutor continues either way.
How quickly can you start?
The free assessment is usually booked within a week, and regular lessons generally begin the following week.
How do you check your tutors?
Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and anyone tutoring in Queanbeyan holds a NSW Working with Children Check as well. Ask for your tutor's registration number before the first lesson and it will be provided.
Can siblings share a session?
Sometimes, and it depends on the age gap and the subjects. Two children at very different stages get materially less from a shared hour, and the assessment is where that gets worked out honestly.
The short version
Why families pick us.
Named among Canberra’s best
One of five tutoring services named in Region Canberra’s guide to the best tutors in Canberra, updated December 2025.
Teaching here since 2004
Twenty-two years in this city — long enough to have taught in the same college a parent went to, and to know which primary schools run which reading programs.
Checked twice, not once
Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and everyone who crosses the border to Queanbeyan holds a NSW Working with Children Check as well. Ask for the number before the first lesson.
Qualified teachers, not only tutors
Most tutoring in Canberra is delivered by university students. We field both, and the free assessment decides which one your child actually needs.
A second opinion behind every tutor
Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff, so if something is not working it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.
An hour before you spend anything
A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, at your kitchen table, and a written report you keep whether or not you ever book a lesson.
