The six ACT senior maths courses, named correctly.

Canberra parents choosing a Year 11 maths course are choosing a ceiling. The ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies offers six courses, and most tutoring sites in this city name four of them.

  • Specialist Mathematics — taken in conjunction with Specialist Methods.
  • Specialist Methods
  • Mathematical Methods
  • Mathematical Applications
  • Essential Mathematics
  • Bridging Numeracy

Course choice is constrained by what a student completed in Year 10, which is why the Year 9 and Year 10 fork decides more than most families realise at the time.

BSSS consultation note, August 2026: the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies is reviewing whether Mathematics should become a requirement of the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. Maths has never been compulsory for the certificate. A discussion paper proposes a minimum of a Minor — one year, in Year 11, in Year 12, or across both. Public consultation closes Friday 21 August 2026 and no decision has been made. Details at bsss.act.edu.au.

Marks accumulate from the first unit of Year 11.

The ACT runs no external subject-based examinations. Assessment is continuous and school-based, unit by unit. There is no single exam to cram for, and none to rescue a bad year with.

A course score is calculated from a student’s best 80% of unit scores, and course scores are not percentages — they typically fall between 30 and 105. Roughly one unit in five can be discarded, so one bad semester is survivable and two are not.

A Standard Unit runs 55 hours across a semester, and most students carry five or six units per semester. A course is at least two units, which the Board calls a Minor.

The full arithmetic of an ACT ATAR — scaling, the aggregate, and the ACT Scaling Test — is set out on the ACT BSSS page.

Where maths actually breaks, by stage.

Primary, Kindergarten to Year 6

The break points have names, and “confidence” is not one of them: place value, number bonds to ten and twenty, automatic recall of multiplication facts, the shift from additive to multiplicative thinking, fractions understood as numbers rather than as pictures, and written algorithms that conceal a missing concept underneath a correct answer.

A qualified teacher can identify which of those is missing inside an hour. That is the specific thing a capable university student generally cannot do.

Years 7 to 10

Index laws, linear and quadratic algebra, Pythagoras and trigonometry, similarity, and statistics and probability. The Year 9 to 10 fork is where a student’s senior maths course is effectively decided.

Year 10 course selection constrains which Year 11 maths course is available. A student who drifts through Year 10 algebra has quietly closed the door on Specialist Methods before anyone discusses it with them.

What the free hour covers, and what it costs.

A full 60 minutes, led by a qualified teacher, in the family’s home, before any money changes hands. Twelve Canberra services offer something free, so the word free is not the point — the hour, the teacher and the kitchen table are.

The teacher works through the student’s actual book and last marked test, and the family keeps a written plan whether or not a lesson is ever booked.

No mark or unit-score improvement is guaranteed by Canberra Tutoring, because no honest service can guarantee one. What is guaranteed is the same teacher every week, the full hour, and a plan in writing.

Rates depend on year level, on whether the lesson is delivered by a tutor or a qualified teacher, on travel, and on frequency. See pricing.

Maths questions Canberra parents ask

Which senior maths course should my child take?

The right course depends on the university pathway and on what the student completed in Year 10. Specialist Methods and Specialist Mathematics suit engineering, physics and mathematics degrees; Mathematical Methods suits most science, economics and health pathways; Mathematical Applications and Essential Mathematics serve students who need solid numeracy rather than calculus. The Year 10 result usually constrains the choice more than interest does.

Does Year 11 maths count towards the ATAR?

Yes. Because the ACT has no external subject examinations, unit scores accumulate from the first semester of Year 11 and cannot be overwritten later. A course score is built from the best 80% of those unit scores.

What is a unit score?

A unit score is the mark awarded for one semester-length unit of a course, produced by continuous school-based assessment at the student's college. A Standard Unit runs 55 hours across a semester, and students typically carry five or six units at a time.

My child is in Year 10 and choosing courses. What matters most?

Algebra fluency. Index laws, rearranging formulae and quadratic work are the gate to Mathematical Methods and Specialist Methods, and they are also the hidden gate to college Physics and Chemistry. A student weak in Year 10 algebra will find the senior course selection made for them.

Do you help with assignments without doing them?

Yes, and the boundary is firm: teaching happens against the marking criteria, and the student writes the work. A tutor who completes a student's assessment has damaged both the student's learning and their academic integrity record.

How quickly can we start?

The free assessment is usually booked within a week, and regular lessons generally begin the week after. The same teacher then attends each week.

Do you tutor in our suburb?

Canberra Tutoring covers Belconnen, Gungahlin, the Inner North, the Inner South, Woden Valley, Weston Creek, Molonglo Valley, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan. Online is available anywhere.

Is maths compulsory for the ACT certificate?

Not at present. Mathematics has never been a requirement of the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. The BSSS is consulting on whether to introduce a minimum requirement of a Minor, with consultation closing on Friday 21 August 2026. No decision has been made.
