Kindergarten to Year 12
Kindergarten
to Year 12.
Every subject, and the teacher or tutor the assessment says your child needs.
Every subject, and who teaches it.
Canberra Tutoring employs both qualified teachers and tutors. The free assessment is what decides which one a child needs — and if the answer is a teacher, families are told so, even though it costs more.
Maths
Kindergarten to Year 12, through to Specialist Methods. Place value and number facts at one end; Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics at the other.
English
Decoding, comprehension, essay structure and ACT college English. Reading problems and writing problems need different teaching.
Science
Junior science Years 7 to 10, and college Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Earth and Environmental Science.
ACT BSSS, Years 11 and 12
Unit scores, moderation, scaling and the ACT Scaling Test — the system that actually builds an ACT ATAR.
NAPLAN
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The next window is 10–22 March 2027. We close the gaps behind the test rather than drill past papers.
Reading difficulty and dyslexia
Structured literacy taught explicitly and in order, by teachers trained to do it.
Scholarship and selective exams
ACER scholarship testing for independent schools, and NSW selective entry for border families.
How lessons are delivered.
In your home, at the kitchen table, with a parent home and the schoolwork out. In-home tutoring covers matching, safety and the practicalities.
Online where it suits better — evenings after sport, a specialist subject where the right teacher lives across town, illness, weather or a family across the border. Online tutoring.
The same person every week, either way. Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff, so where something is not working it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.
Questions about subjects
What subjects do you tutor?
Maths and English from Kindergarten to Year 12, science from Year 7 including college Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology, ACT BSSS senior courses, NAPLAN preparation, structured literacy for reading difficulty, and scholarship and selective exam preparation.
Is my child taught by a teacher or a tutor?
Either, and the free assessment decides. Canberra Tutoring employs both qualified teachers and tutors. A qualified teacher suits senior unit scores, structured literacy and diagnosing why a child is stuck; a tutor suits weekly consolidation.
Can we cover more than one subject?
Yes, though a single hour split across two subjects usually achieves less than an hour focused on one. The assessment is where that trade-off gets worked through honestly.
Do you follow the school's work or your own program?
Both, and the balance depends on the diagnosis. Where a student is keeping up but shaky, lessons follow the school's task sheets and marking criteria. Where there is an older gap underneath, that gap is taught directly, because following the school's work alone would keep building on the same missing foundation.
