Kindergarten to Year 12

English tutoring
in Canberra.

From decoding to the Year 12 essay — and the difference matters.

A child who cannot read the text has a different problem from one who cannot structure an answer.

Most English tutoring in Canberra treats those two children identically. Treating the second problem when the child actually has the first is the usual reason previous tutoring failed.

The reading strand

Decoding, phonic knowledge, fluency and reading rate, vocabulary depth, and inferential comprehension. A Year 7 student can decode aloud perfectly well and still fail comprehension, because fluent decoding and understanding are separate skills.

Where decoding itself is the persistent problem, structured literacy is the right page.

The writing strand

Sentence-level control, paragraph structure, thesis and argument, use of textual evidence, analysis as distinct from retelling, and editing taught as a separate skill rather than assumed.

The free hour is what tells the two strands apart. A qualified teacher hears the child read aloud and reads a real piece of their school writing — neither of which happens on a fifteen-minute phone consultation.

Academic integrity, stated harder than the industry states it.

Canberra Tutoring does not write, co-write or edit a student’s assessment.

What happens with a draft instead: the teacher and student read the marking criteria together, the teacher marks the draft as a teacher would against those criteria, and the draft goes back to the student to rewrite. The student does the writing, every time.

The distinction matters more in the ACT than almost anywhere else in the country. Because assessment here is continuous and school-based rather than settled by an external examination, an integrity finding follows a student through the unit scores that build their ATAR.

Senior English in the ACT, and the writing task that scales everyone.

The ACT senior English family includes English, Literature, Essential English, and English as an Additional Language. At T level every unit score is produced by school-based assessment — there is no external English examination in the ACT. [Course-family names should be checked against the current BSSS Course Register before publication.]

How unit scores become an ATAR is set out on the ACT BSSS page.

The AST Writing Task is an English skill that scales an entire cohort’s course scores, and no competitor mentions it on an English page. Year 12 students seeking an ATAR sit a 2 hour 30 minute Writing Task producing a 600-word argumentative response to previously unseen stimulus, alongside a 2 hour Short Response paper of 19 to 25 reasoning questions.

Building a 600-word argument to a deadline, on material never seen before, is taught — and English tutoring is where it gets built.

NAPLAN writing, and what ACARA says about preparing for it.

Students are given a prompt and asked for either a narrative or a persuasive text. The text type is revealed on the day, with no choice offered. Writing is marked by trained assessors against a ten-criteria rubric applied identically across Australia.

Year 3 sits the writing test on paper; Years 5, 7 and 9 sit it online. That difference changes what preparation is worth doing. More on NAPLAN.

ACARA’s own position is the most useful sentence available to an honest tutor: “The best preparation for NAPLAN is to teach the curriculum.”

A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in the family’s home, and a written plan the family keeps. No mark improvement is guaranteed; the same teacher every week is.

English questions Canberra parents ask

Will a tutor help with my child’s assignment?

A tutor will teach against the marking criteria and mark a draft as a teacher would, then hand it back for the student to rewrite. A tutor will not write, co-write or edit the assessment itself. In the ACT, where assessment is continuous and school-based, an integrity finding follows a student through the unit scores that build their ATAR.

My child reads fine but writes badly. What is going on?

Reading and writing are separate skills, and a fluent reader can have no working model of paragraph structure, thesis or evidence. The reverse also occurs. The assessment hour distinguishes the two by hearing the child read aloud and reading a real piece of their school writing.

How do you know what the marking criteria are?

ACT courses are criterion-referenced and colleges publish task sheets with the criteria attached. Teaching starts from the student's actual task sheet and the published Achievement Standards for the course, not from a generic essay template.

Do you cover Literature and Essential English?

Yes, alongside English and English as an Additional Language. The senior English family in the ACT spans several courses at different levels, and the right one depends on the student's pathway.

Can this help with the AST Writing Task?

Yes. The AST Writing Task is a 600-word argumentative response to unseen stimulus, written in 2 hours 30 minutes. Structuring an argument at speed on unfamiliar material is a taught skill and is practised directly.

Is online as good for writing feedback?

For most students from about Year 5 upward, yes — provided both people can write on a shared workspace and the same tutor attends each week. Early primary writing and handwriting work are better done in the home.

Do you teach both narrative and persuasive writing for NAPLAN?

Both, always. The NAPLAN text type is revealed on the test day and students get no choice, so a child coached in only one is relying on a coin flip.
