Belconnen
In-home tutoring
in Belconnen.
The district with the most college choice — and the most to get wrong.
Belconnen families have more college options than anyone else in Canberra.
Roughly 106,000 people live across the Belconnen district, and it is the only part of Canberra served by three public colleges: Hawker College, UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra, and Melba Copland Secondary School.
More choice makes the Year 10 decision harder, not easier. Each college builds its own course lines, and a subject combination that runs comfortably at one may clash at another or attract too few students to run at all.
Because ACT course scores are calculated within a scaling group at a student’s own college, the choice of campus is part of the academic decision rather than merely a logistical one. How ACT course scores work.
Belconnen is also a district of long-established suburbs with settled schools: Aranda, Bruce, Charnwood, Cook, Evatt, Flynn, Fraser, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Macgregor, Macquarie, McKellar, Melba, Page, Scullin, Spence, Weetangera and the town centre itself.
Tutors travel to all of them. Sessions run at your kitchen table, with a parent home.

The Year 9 to 10 algebra fork
Year 10 course selection quietly decides which senior maths course is available in Year 11, and algebra fluency is the gate. A student who drifts through Year 10 algebra has closed the door on Specialist Methods before anyone discusses it. Maths tutoring.
Senior subjects across three colleges
Unit scores accumulate from the first semester of Year 11 and there is no external exam to recover with. Intervening early in Year 11 costs a family far less than intervening in Term 3 of Year 12. ACT BSSS tutoring.
The free hour happens at your table.
A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in your home, before anything is paid. A written plan follows, and the family keeps it whether or not a lesson is ever booked.
Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. Ask for the registration number before the first lesson and it will be provided.
Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff. Hiring a private tutor means relying on one person’s judgement; here there is a second, more experienced one behind it — so when something is not working, it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.

Questions Canberra parents ask
Which Belconnen suburbs do you cover?
All of them, including Aranda, Bruce, Charnwood, Cook, Evatt, Flynn, Fraser, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Macgregor, Macquarie, McKellar, Melba, Page, Scullin, Spence and Weetangera. Tutors come to the house.
Which colleges serve Belconnen students?
Hawker College, UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra and Melba Copland Secondary School are the public colleges in the district, which makes Belconnen the most college-rich part of Canberra. Independent and Catholic colleges elsewhere in the city also take Belconnen students.
Does the college my child attends affect their ATAR?
Indirectly, yes. ACT course scores are calculated within a scaling group at the student's own college, and each college builds its own course lines, so the available subject combinations differ. Scaling then brings results from different colleges onto a common scale.
Do you tutor primary students in Belconnen?
Yes, from Kindergarten upward. Primary work focuses on the specific break points — place value, number facts, fractions as numbers, decoding and fluency — rather than on general confidence.
Is there a travel charge to Belconnen?
Travel is one of four things that set a quote, alongside year level, whether the lesson is delivered by a tutor or a qualified teacher, and how many lessons a week. The number is quoted once, on the phone, and does not change afterwards.
