Weston Creek

In-home tutoring
in Weston Creek.

A small district with one public high school — and one big transition.

Weston Creek has a single public high school, which concentrates everything.

Mount Stromlo High School is the district’s only public high school. Almost every local student passes through the same Year 7 to 10 transition, at the same time, with the same cohort.

Suburbs covered: Chapman, Duffy, Fisher, Holder, Rivett, Stirling, Waramanga and Weston.

A single feeder school makes the Year 6 to Year 7 move unusually visible. Families compare notes, and a gap that a child carried quietly through primary school tends to surface in the first year of high school when the reading load and the number of teachers both jump.

Weston Creek has no college of its own, so senior students travel — usually to Canberra College in Woden Valley, and sometimes further. The Year 10 decision is therefore a genuine choice of campus.

Because ACT course scores are calculated within a scaling group at the student’s own college, that choice affects which subjects are available and the cohort the student is compared with. ACT BSSS tutoring.

The Year 7 jump, and what actually causes it.

The usual explanation offered to parents is that a child needs to organise themselves better. Sometimes that is true. More often the cause is specific and older: unfinished number facts, fractions never understood as numbers, or reading that is accurate but too slow to carry a high-school text load.

The free hour identifies which of those it is. Maths, English, and where reading itself is the barrier, structured literacy.

Year 9 NAPLAN is the last territory-wide signal a family receives before Year 10 course selection decides the senior pathway. The next window is 10–22 March 2027. More on NAPLAN.

The free hour happens at your table.

A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in your home, before anything is paid. A written plan follows, and the family keeps it whether or not a lesson is ever booked.

Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. Ask for the registration number before the first lesson and it will be provided.

Every tutor is reviewed fortnightly by a qualified teacher on staff. Hiring a private tutor means relying on one person’s judgement; here there is a second, more experienced one behind it — so when something is not working, it surfaces in a fortnight rather than at the end of term.

Neighbouring districts: Woden Valley, the Molonglo Valley and Tuggeranong.
