Biology tutoring
in Canberra.
The precision and the writing — which is where the marks actually are.
Biology is not the easy science.
It is the one with the largest volume of precise terminology and the most demanding extended-response writing — and it is where students who write vaguely lose marks they thought they had earned.
Where biology marks are actually lost
- Writing around a concept instead of naming it precisely.
- Describing when the question says explain, or explaining when it says evaluate.
- Cell biology and membrane transport — the usual Year 11 wall.
- Genetics: pedigrees, probability and the maths inside inheritance.
- Homeostasis and negative feedback described without the mechanism.
- Ecology and data interpretation from unfamiliar graphs.
Biology rewards precision of language more than any other science. A student who says “the cell takes in water” where the criteria want osmosis, water potential and a concentration gradient has lost the mark despite understanding the idea.
That is a teachable, correctable habit, and it is most of what senior biology tutoring actually does.
At T level every unit score is produced by school-based assessment. The ACT sets no external subject examinations, so a course score is built from the best 80% of unit scores banked across Years 11 and 12. How ACT course scores work.
The writing problem inside a science subject.
Extended response is where biology separates students. The command words matter: identify, describe, explain, compare, evaluate and justify each demand a different structure, and marking criteria are written against them.
This is the one science where English tutoring and science tutoring genuinely overlap — and where a student strong in content can still underperform.
Practical work in biology
- Designing a valid experiment with genuine controls.
- Handling biological variability and sample size.
- Statistical treatment of results, including means and error.
- Ethical considerations, which carry marks in their own right.
Data interpretation is also directly rewarded by the AST Multiple Choice paper. More on the AST.
What the free hour covers.
A full 60 minutes with a qualified teacher, in your home, before anything is paid. The teacher looks at the last marked assessment and the current task sheet, and you keep a written plan whether or not a lesson is ever booked.
Every tutor and teacher holds a current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, and everyone who works in Queanbeyan holds a NSW Working with Children Check as well.
No mark, unit score or ATAR outcome is guaranteed by Canberra Tutoring, because no honest service can guarantee one. What is guaranteed is the same teacher every week, the full hour, and a plan in writing.

Biology questions Canberra parents ask
Is biology easier than chemistry or physics?
No, it is differently hard. Biology carries far more precise terminology and much more extended-response writing. Students who find the maths in chemistry and physics difficult often assume biology is the soft option and are surprised by the writing demand.
Why does my child understand biology but score poorly?
Usually command words and precision. Marking criteria distinguish sharply between describe, explain, compare and evaluate, and vague phrasing loses marks even when the understanding is sound. That is a teachable habit rather than a knowledge gap.
Is there maths in biology?
Yes — genetics probability, statistical treatment of results, population calculations and graph interpretation. It is less continuous than in physics or chemistry but it appears at exactly the points that carry marks.
Do you cover Year 11 and Year 12 biology?
Both, plus junior science from Year 7. Because ACT unit scores accumulate from the first semester of Year 11, starting early is materially cheaper than repairing late.
Can you help with the practical investigation?
Yes, on design, validity, data handling and structure — marked against the college's own criteria. The student writes it.
